Bengaluru: The Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) on Sunday appealed to the State government seriously reconsider the construction of the Rs. 1800 crore 6.5-KMs steel flyover across Chalukya Circle to Hebbal Flyover in the backdrop of severe opposition from all quarters.
The State government has already accorded the cabinet approval for the project which will be executed by Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) and Nagarjuna Ltd, with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) overseeing it.
Thyagu Valliappa, President, BCIC said that going by the serious reservations expressed not only by political parties and experts but also by the general masses. “We at BCIC feel that the State Government should seriously reconsider the details of the projects by either going in for construction of smaller flyovers connecting the existing underpasses and flyovers, or scouting for alternative routes to decongest this gridlock junction on the 6.5-km stretch. This way the government will not only be able to save the green cover which will get uprooted but also utilise tax payers’ money for other projects which need immediate attention.,’’ Thyagu Valliappa said.
Valliappa further added: “World over it is seen that if government enables efficient and affordable public transport system, the masses would prefer to use this mode of transport rather than use private vehicles to commute. It is high time that we expedite the completion of metro rail and also push for the same in other parts of the city. This will automatically decongest traffic in the city.”
He said the BCIC feels that whenever government announces mega projects like the steel flyover, public consultation is a must so as to enable smooth execution of projects.
