Bengaluru: The sixth waste-processing plant at Subbarayappana Palya has been put to service by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) after receiving poor scores in the national Swachh Survekshan Survey. It had remained unused for the last eight years.
Ten compactors filled with trash are now being brought to the plant daily by the BBMP.
One of the reasons Bengaluru scored worse than many other cities in the cleanliness study this year was a lack of sufficient waste processing plants.
The majority of the rubbish that the BBMP collects is sent to landfills.
In Bengaluru, there are a total of seven plants for processing waste. Six of them—Chikkanagamangala, Doddabidarakallu, Kanahalli, KCDC, Lingadheeranahalli, and MSGP are now in operation but have a daily processing capacity of over 1,500 tonnes.
The BBMP has not been able to use its seventh plant, which is located in Seegehalli, due to opposition from people. These processing facilities were all established eight years ago. The BBMP hasn’t made any processing plants lately.
