The much-anticipated Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Metro line is projected to open by mid-2026, announced Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Managing Director, M Maheshwar Rao. The stretch between the airport terminal and Hebbal is expected to begin operations between June and September 2026. The Hebbal–KR Pura segment is likely to follow by December of the same year, easing commutes for air travelers and avoiding tolls on road routes.
This Blue Line primarily consists of elevated tracks, with notable exceptions. These include a ground-level section near the airport and two short underground stretches at Jakkur Aerodrome and Yelahanka Air Force Base. Once complete, the line will feature 30 stations, enhancing connectivity across Bengaluru.
Efforts to construct the Bettahalasur station, funded through a ₹140 crore agreement with Embassy Group, are still under discussion. Progress in Chikkajala and areas near the Yelahanka Air Force Station remains slow, with tenders for architectural finishing works yet to be reissued after earlier cancellations.
In addition to this, a new metro corridor connecting Hebbal and Sarjapur via the city center has received approval. Part of Namma Metro Phase 3A, this 36.59-km route aims to link northern and southern Bengaluru seamlessly.
While earlier plans to complete Phase 2 construction by 2025 have faced delays, ongoing developments promise a significant upgrade to Bengaluru’s public transport landscape.
