Bengaluru: Cyber thieves, posing as bank employees, made a call to a businessman and cheated him of Rs. 3.97 lakh from him after obtaining an OTP on the pretext that his bank account would be blocked if his PAN card was not updated.

Dinesh Shetty (64) of Kumarakrupa Road is the businessman who was duped. On the afternoon of Tuesday October 4, Shetty received a call from an unidentified man posing as a private bank employee. He then convinced Shetty that if he doesn’t update his PAN card, his bank account would be blocked. He then asked the OTP to download the AnyDesk app. Believing him, Dinesh Shetty told him the OTP number that came to his mobile phone.

Shortly thereafter, a total of Rs 3.97 lakh was withdrawn from Dinesh Shetty’s bank account in a phased manner. When Dinesh Shetty got a message on his mobile phone about the money being deducted, he enquired with the bank staff about it and found that it was the handiwork of a cyber thief.
