Bengaluru Doctor Loses ₹2.3 Lakh in Video Call Scam

Video Call Scam

A 72-year-old doctor from Bengaluru fell victim to a sophisticated video call scam, losing ₹2.3 lakh to fraudsters. The incident occurred a few weeks ago, but the doctor recently reached out to the police in an attempt to recover his lost money.

How the Scam Unfolded

According to a report in *The Times of India*, the senior doctor, who works at a well-known hospital in Bengaluru, received a video call from an unknown woman on July 27. The doctor answered the call, and the woman engaged him in a seductive conversation, eventually convincing him to strip on camera. The call was abruptly disconnected shortly afterward.

The following day, the doctor received a call from a man claiming to be an officer from the Delhi police. The so-called officer informed the doctor that explicit videos of him had been posted on social media and that he would need to visit the police station. However, the man assured the doctor that he could help get the videos removed, provided the doctor cooperated.

The Fraudsters’ Demands

Shortly after, the doctor received another call, this time from someone claiming to be an employee of YouTube. This person demanded ₹41,500 to have the videos taken down. In a state of panic, the doctor transferred the requested amount. Over the course of several more calls, the scammers managed to extract a total of ₹2.3 lakh from the doctor.

Realization and Police Involvement

It was only after the repeated demands for money that the doctor realised he had been duped. Initially hesitant to disclose the details of the video call, the doctor contacted the police to learn more about such cyber scams. Eventually, he filed a formal complaint with the cyber police, who are now working to track down the fraudsters.

Rise of Cyber Scams

This case highlights the growing threat of cyber scams in India, particularly those targeting vulnerable individuals. Scammers often use fear and embarrassment to manipulate victims into complying with their demands. Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to be cautious when interacting with unknown callers and to report any suspicious activity immediately.

As cybercrimes continue to evolve, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed and vigilant. The Bengaluru police are currently investigating the case, hoping to apprehend the criminals and recover the doctor’s lost money.
