Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has ordered the issuance of notice to all concerned authorities in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against illegal electric fences that kill elephants and other wild animals in the State.
A division bench presided by Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale heard the PIL filed by Advocate Ankush Yennemajal on Monday October 31.
The Karnataka Power Corporation Limited and the Forest Department of Karnataka do not seem to be bothered by the fact that illegal connections are now being given in several places in the State, especially in rural areas, the PIL alleged, citing news reports of elephant deaths due to electrocution.
It was claimed that of the about 6,000 elephants in the State forests, 70 died in 2021, out of which 15 were due to unnatural causes, including electrocution. The PIL urges the authorities for direction on how to stop such wild animal deaths.
