Bengaluru: Over 50 per cent of government-run Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) AC Volvo buses are still at depots due to the low occupancy rate. This has adversely affected the finance of the Corporation.
According to the authorities, out of 836 Volvo buses, only 375 are operational. Over 110 buses are operating to Airport while 275 are on the major roads. The Corporation is earning an operational revenue of Rs.42 lakhs. The rest of the buses are parked in the bus depot as there is not much demand for the service.
Before the Covid – 19 outbreak, over 736 Volvo buses were operational.
According to the authorities, with a majority of the IT companies continuing to work from home for their employees, there is hardly any demand for this AC service.
“Running the buses without enough revenue is eating into the corporation revenue. Keeping them idle in the depots is also not a solution,” explained officials.
