Bengaluru: Four major Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) service providers have each been fined Rs. 20 lakh by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for illegally digging up newly laid roads in Jayanagar, installing telecom towers on the footpath without permission, and tying wires to trees.
The penalty in Jayanagar was imposed following the complaint of a former Corporator.
The four companies are Bharti Airtel Limited, Telesonic Networks Limited, Jio Digital Fiber Private Limited, and VAC Teleinfra Solution Private Limited. The BBMP has also filed a complaint against these companies to the police.
The action was taken against these firms after former Corporator and BJP leader N. R. Ramesh complained to BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath about telecom towers on the footpaths. For each corporation that violated a particular set of rules established by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), he demanded a penalty of Rs. 20 Crore.
