Bengaluru: The State Government issued a notification on Wednesday November 23 to regularise the services of 3,673 pourakarmikas who work for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
According to the official statement, these sanitation workers, who are currently employed on a contract basis, will be brought under a wage of Rs 17,000 to Rs 28,950 per month.
An eight-member team led by BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has been formed to shortlist the candidates among the 18,000 workforces. The maximum age limit has been restricted to 55 years.
The notification states that “A person who has worked for more years shall be preferred against the one who has worked for lesser. The preference shall be in the order of direct pay, Kshemabhivrudhi or daily wages in BBMP, on producing documents of payment. They shall produce evidence for working and being paid for at least two years.”
The BBMP has been urged to ease the criteria to select candidates from Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe in the case that candidates from the General Merit category and other Backward Classes categories are not available.
The Association for Pourakarmikas demanded that all sanitisation workers’ jobs be made regularised.
