Bengaluru soldier martyred in Jammu terror encounter

Bengaluru: Two officers and five soldiers were martyred in a terror attack on an army unit in Nagrota, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. Major Akshay Girish Kumar (31) hailing from Bengaluru is one among the seven killed in the encounter.
Akshay Girish Kumar is a graduate from Jawaharlal Nehru University and son of retired IAF Pilot Girish Kumar and Meghana Girish. He married his friend Sangeetha Ravendran four years back and has a three-year-old daughter. His parents were living in an apartment near Sadahalli on Bengaluru Airport road. Akshay was living with his wife in an army quarter in Kashmir.

It may be recalled that on Tuesday, heavily armed terrorists disguised as policemen attacked an Army unit posted close to the Corps Headquarters in Nagrota, which is less than 15 km away from Jammu. They stormed into the officers’ mess after throwing grenades.

In the attack, two officers and five soldiers were martyred. In the encounter, the armymen killed three terrorists and rescued two women, two children and 12 soldiers who were trapped in a hostage-like situation.
