Bengaluru: A man wanted in the theft of a gold Mangalsutra lost 20 kgs in the span of just one-and-a-half months to escape from the police, it is reported.

The arrested accused has been identified as Manjunath alias Gym Manja (28). He is also a gym trainer by profession and decided to steal as he was not satisfied with his earnings. Thus, in December 2022, he stole a 45-gram gold Mangalsutra from a woman. Soon the victim lodged a complaint and on the basis of the CCTV image police began searching for the accused.

Like a story straight out of a film, Manjunath not only began working out to lose weight to escape from the police but also stayed in a rented house near the police station to keep an eye on the movement of the police.

On a tip-off, when police went to his house to arrest him, they were confused if they found the right person due to the tremendous weight loss of the accused. However, on intense interrogation, Manjunath confessed to the crime.

Police also recovered the Mangalsutra and Rs. 2.20 lakh from him.
