Bengaluru is set to face a mix of relief and discomfort in the coming days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy pre-monsoon rainfall alongside warmer-than-usual nights. While the rains will provide a welcome respite from the unusually hot February, residents should brace for warmer evenings and early mornings, as nighttime temperatures are expected to rise.

More Rain and Cooler Days Ahead

According to the IMD, Bengaluru and southern Karnataka are likely to receive 30-40% more pre-monsoon rainfall than usual. This increased rainfall will help reduce daytime temperatures, offering much-needed comfort after a record-hot February. The coastal and Malnad regions are expected to experience even more rainfall, up to 50-60% above average, which will bring further cooling to these areas.

However, experts warn that Bengaluru’s densely populated areas could still feel warmer due to the urban heat island effect, where buildings and concrete surfaces trap heat, preventing full cooling of the city.

Warmer Nights on the Horizon

Despite the expected daytime cooling, nights in Bengaluru are predicted to feel warmer than usual. IMD senior scientist C.S. Patil has stated that nighttime temperatures could rise by 1-2°C, making evenings and early mornings uncomfortably warm. Residents may find the nights especially challenging, despite the daytime rains.

What’s Behind the Shift in Weather?

Meteorologists attribute these shifts in weather patterns to the weakening of La Nina conditions, which typically bring cooler weather to the region. As La Nina fades, warmer atmospheric patterns are expected to take over, contributing to both higher temperatures and unpredictable rainfall.

While the rain will bring some relief during the day, Bengaluru residents are advised to prepare for the warmer nights by staying hydrated, dressing in light, breathable clothing, and ensuring their homes are well-ventilated to help mitigate the discomfort.
