Bengaluru: As many as 13 disqualified MLAs of the 16 who joined the BJP on Thursday, November 14, have been given a ticket to contest in the upcoming Assembly by-polls.

The BJP’s state unit has released the list of candidates for 13 Assembly segments. They are: Ramesh Jarakiholi (Gokak), M T B Nagaraj (Hosakote), A H Vishwanath (Hunsur), Shrimantha B Patil (Kagwad), Shivaram Hebbar (Yellapur), Mahesh Kumathalli (Athani), Anand Singh (Vijayanagar), B C Patil (Hirekerur), Byrathi Basavaraj (K R Pura), S T Somashekhar (Yeshwanthpur), Dr Sudhakar (Chikkaballapura), Gopalaiah (Mahalakshmi Layout) and Narayana Gowda (K R Pete).

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa opined, “The 17 MLAs are the reason why I am occupying the CM’s chamber on the third floor of the Vidhana Soudha. They have sacrificed a lot for us (BJP). After the Supreme Court’s verdict on the disqualification row, all the 17 MLAs contacted the BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel and joined our party under his leadership.”

He added, “I assure all those who have joined the BJP, that their demands will be fulfilled and that they will not be betrayed. Never in the history of our country have 17 legislators resigned from a party. I request all the party workers to help them win in the upcoming by-polls and let their sacrifices not go to waste.”

It can be recalled that the Supreme Court had given a balanced verdict in the case of the 17 disqualified MLAs, upholding former speaker Ramesh Kumar’s decision to disqualify them under the provisions of the anti-defection law, while also allowing them to contest in the elections, as a fresh government is in power.
