Bengaluru: A member of India for CAA was attacked with a knife on Sunday, December 22, on Jayachamaraja (JC) Road in Bengaluru city.
The victim has been identified as Varun Bhoopalam (31), a resident of J P Nagar and also a BJP party worker.
It is being reported that the attack occurred when Varun was returning from a pro-CAA rally that was held at the Town Hall earlier today. The locals immediately rushed him to the Victoria Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.
Bengaluru South BJP MP Tejasvi Surya and DCP (West) Ramesh have met Varun at the hospital. According to the doctors, he is out of danger.
DCP (West) Ramesh told TNM that Varun, who was plying on a bike, was waylaid by four men on two bikes, beaten up and stabbed. He has suffered injuries to his head and back.
The DCP (West) informed that the police are looking at CCTV footage from the area in order to identify Varun’s attackers.
He, however, clarified that prima facie, the case appears to be personal in nature and not based on political rivalry. He said, “There is no evidence that the attack was politically motivated. We will know what happened only after we question the suspects. It looks like a personal issue.”
He has asked the people not to believe rumours of the attack being politically motivated unless the investigations say otherwise.
A case stands registered in the Kalasipalya police station under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 334 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons), 322 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.
