Bengaluru: The state Cabinet approved the borders of the newly created 31st district of the Karnataka- Vijayanagara, a week after approving the formation of the same.
It can be recalled that on November 18, the Cabinet had informally approved the formation of Vijayanagara as the state’s 31st district, which would be carved out of the Ballari district.
Following this, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had asked officials to draw up boundaries for Vijayanagara before giving the new district his formal approval.
Hospet, according to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), will be Vijayanagara’s district headquarters.
According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy, there will be six taluks namely Hospet, Harappanahalli, Hoovinahadagali, Hagari Bommanahalli, Kotturu and Kudligi. A notification in this regard will be issued soon, the Minister added.
The Ballari district will retain the rest of the taluks.
It can be recalled that mining baron and Minister for Environment and Forests Anand Singh, had been fighting for the creation of a separate Vijayanagara district and in September of 2019, the CM acknowledged his proposal.
Since then, heated debates were seen as many politicians and other groups were strongly opposed to the move.
While BJP MLA G Somashekhar Reddy called the proposal “selfish” and the Kalyana Karnataka Horata Samiti threatened to launch protests against the move, CMO sources have said that the new district was approved mainly to ensure that administration runs smoothly.
