Bengaluru: A Pakistani woman who was arrested in Bengaluru a few months ago for staying here illegally, has given birth to a baby girl at the Victoria Hospital a week ago. The baby will be getting Indian citizenship, it is gathered.

Samira Rehman was three months pregnant at the time of her arrest (May 22) along with her husband Rehman, a Keralite and two more relatives of Samira, both Pakistani nationals. They were also found in possession of fake identity cards and were staying here illegally.

According to experts, the baby would get an Indian citizenship technically since her father is an Indian. Meanwhile, as per a view given by a legal counsel, a baby is the natural citizen of any country of its birth, irrespective of the nationalities of the parents.

The baby and her mother have been given a separate cell at the Women’s Wing, said an official source at the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail.
