Bengaluru: The state government has decided to withdraw cases filed against the farmers during Mahadayi protest. The decision came after the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday in Vidhana Soudha.
Briefing the media about the decision, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that all cases against the agitating farmers will be withdrawn. The Mahadayi row was discussed in detail as well as the report submitted by the additional DGP Raghavendra Auradkar about the violence that turned out on the day of Bandh, he said.
The police atrocity at Yemalur, where police personnel lathi-charged women and some innocents, was also discussed and stringent action will be taken against the errant officers, he said.
The protest against the verdict of Mahadayi water dispute turned violent on July 30 and some miscreants damaged public properties in northern part of Karnataka. In order to curb violence police resorted to lathi-charge and detained hundreds of agitating farmers. The arrested farmers were jailed at Bellari and Chitradurga central jails.
The cabinet decision came as a much needed relief for the farmers’ fraternity who are protesting against the tribunal order.
