Bengaluru: The state’s letter recommending separate religious tag for Lingayat community has been rejected by the Union Home ministry. A notification in this regard was issued by the central government on November 13.
Prabhulinga K Navadagi, Additional Solicitor General, informed the two judge bench of the state High Court, that the central government has rejected the recommendation of both the state government and the state minority commission in this regard.
The Lingayat community was started by Basavanna in the 12th century, and the state government had recommended the center to give minority status to the Lingayats.
