Chikkaballapura: Dowry is a social evil and at present some people are becoming victims of this menace, said Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary Shivakumar and instructed the Women and Child Development Department officiyals to create more awareness among the public about the Dowry Prohibition Act to eradicate the menace completely in the District.

He was speaking after chairing a meeting of the District-level Coordination Committee of the Dowry Prohibition Act held at Narasimhaiah Auditorium. The women who have been subjected to any form of violence are being given temporary rehabilitation at the relief centres by providing counselling, medical treatment, legal advice and protective assistance. So these centres should work more actively and provide justice to the victims. In this regard, he asked the officials concerned to make suitable arrangements for proper utilisation of the District Relief Centre.

“If women accused in a criminal case seek shelter at the relief centre, the relief centre should take steps to admit the concerned to the District Relief Centre with the help of local police officers and provide shelter. In this regard, officials of the Women and Child Development Department should visit the relief centres already functioning in the District once a week and inspect them.
