Chitradurga: A local court here on Monday September 5 handed over Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Mutt pontiff, Shivamurthy Sharanaru to judicial custody till September 14. The Chitradurga Police had produced Shivamurthy before the court on Monday morning. The court directed to hand over Shivamurthy to judicial custody for nine days.
The Mysuru police filed a complaint under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, and Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to rape against Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru on August 26. The girls claimed the state Child Welfare Committee’s members that they had been sexually assaulted between January 1, 2019, and June 6, 2022, which led to this. On Thursday night, Shivamurthy was arrested by the police.
The police have asked that the public prosecutor make any objections prior to the planned hearing on September 7 for the bail application made by Shivamurthy’s lawyer.
