onion M 2842020Chitradurga: Close on the heels of a young lady from Chitradurga posting a video seeking the attention of Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa towards the pangs of onion growers of Chitradurga, the video seems to have reached its destination.

The young farmer identified as Vasantha from Katanayakanahalli of Hiriyooru Taluk here had posted a video on Facebook.

In the video, addressed to the CM, Vasantha is seen saying that the nation may be under lockdown, but the farmers are not!

Getting down to calculations, Vasantha, standing in front of sacks of onions in the go-down says that producing one bag of onion costs anywhere between Rs 500-Rs 600, but at present the cost has come down to Rs 200.

“Who is to be blamed? Nation is under lockdown, but nobody has stopped consuming food. From PM to soldiers to common man, everyone is consuming food that a frmer grows. Many sectors may have been shut down, but farmer continues to work and produce food for the nation to consume,” she says asking Yediyurappa to make sure the Chitrdurga onion growers are helped.

“We are not asking for monetary benefits from you. We want you to purchase our produce at a good price so that we get back what we have invested and we are in a position to clear our debts. You give it away to people….. How you do it is left up to you, but I request you to come to the rescue of the farmers of Chitradurga,” Vasantha says adding that if a farmer faces loss once, he still continues to live, but if he faces losses repeatedly, he has no option but to end life.

As per ‘Prajavani’ Kannada daily, the CM himself called up Vasantha and appreciated her for deciding not live in shadows of victimhood.

It is said that the CM has also directed the DC to visit the area and not just help Vasantha, but also make a study of all growers like Vasantha who are in need of help.

Accordingly, a team from Department of Horticulture visited her residence and assured her of getting a good price for her produce.

Department Deputy Director Dr Savita told ‘Prajavani’ that a few buyers have expressed their desire to purchase the onion at best price possible.
