Bengaluru: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has detected multiple Rs 49 lakh withdrawals from over 2,020 accounts of a nationalised bank in Karnataka last year.

The police have arrested a gang from Jharkhand, led by a 19-year-old high school dropout, on the charge of hacking over 2,020 accounts of State Bank of Mysore customers in a span of two days in April 2016.

The accused has been identified as Suraj Mohali, a native of Mirga village in Jamatara district of Jharkhand.

The police said the accused, along with his associates, began to withdraw Rs 49 lakh from the saving bank accounts and Master card-holders of SBM in Benaluru, Sringeri, Mangaluru, and Tirthahalli.

The police said the accused made as many as 1.56 lakh transactions within few hours. They then transferred the money to various bank accounts that they had opened by submitting fake documents. The accused used some of the cash to recharge mobile phones which helped the cyber police to track them down.

The police have recovered hundreds of bank accounts from Suraj who reportedly confessed that they were part of a bigger network operating from Jharkhand since many years.
