Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said Karnataka police are known for discipline and the government would not tolerate indiscipline among the police personnel.

Speaking at a function organized at Raj Bhavan to felicitate the police personnel who got President’s medals, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the police have the responsibility to safeguard the society. “The police department has the responsibility to ensure law and order in the society. Its duty is to protect the public property. The police have to work without caring about their lives. Police have to do their duty irrespective of whether or not the society recognizes their service. The police should not become apathetic. The society expects better service from the police,’’ the chief minister said.

Recalling the recent incidents of indiscipline among the police personnel, the chief minister said the police department would lose its respect if there is indiscipline. “I know that policemen have no personal life. They cannot attend family functions due to the workload, but it is inevitable. There is no need for murmur since the police have agreed to work under such conditions. I know about the pressure on the police personnel,’’ he said.

Congratulating the police personnel who received the President’s medals, he said that one should not forget the contribution of the families of those policemen who received the President’s medals. “It is not possible for the policemen to serve society better without the cooperation of their families. I want to congratulate their families,’’ he said.

Emphasising the need to maintain the physical fitness, he said the physical fitness would play a key role in enabling the policemen to work effectively. He described the recent suicide incidents of some police officers as unfortunate incidents. “The police need training in maintaining physical fitness and also psychological balance. I am of the opinion that police officers who join special service need special training. I have already directed the police officers on the need to provide special training. It will enable the police department to take preventive measures. It is better to prevent the crime instead of taking action against the culprits after the crime incident takes place,’’ he said.
