Bengaluru: Minister for Energy D K Shivakumar on Friday criticized the Centre for playing politics in supplying coal to Karnataka.

Speaking to media persons here, Shivakumar blamed the Centre for the existing coal crisis in the state. He said the state was unable to procure coal from Maharashtra as the Centre was actively blocking it.

“It’s shocking the way the Centre is playing politics in this issue,” he said.

Shivakumar said that he would raise the issue during the conference of Energy ministers of all states in New Delhi on December 6 and 7.

He, however, said that almost all states in the country had been hit by the shortage in coal supply.

Reiterating that there would be no load shedding, the minister said that all measures would be taken to ensure that the students were not affected during the examination season.

He said that the department had already initiated the process for importing coal.

He also said that efforts were on to purchase additional power. “We are already purchasing around 1,000 MW from the Adani Power (UPCL). We are thinking of purchasing additional power from the same company,” he added.
