Bengaluru: A conman duped a 29-year-old woman and made away with Rs. 2.8 lakh.
The victim, a private firm employee, had uploaded her profile on a matrimonial site in August. A few days ago, a man introducing himself as Mohammed Abdul approached her online claiming to be working in a leading firm in the U.S. After a few conversations, Abdul proposed to marry her after coming to India.
Meanwhile, he said he had sent her a surprise gift. The victim then received a call from a woman claiming to be a courier company representative and informed her that there was a gift cheque of $ 18,000 in her name and confirmed her postal address. The representative told the victim to pay Rs. 2.8 lakh as GST, which the victim transferred to an account. A few minutes later, the representative called again seeking an additional charge of Rs. 2.1 lakh. Growing suspicious, the victim disconnected the call and tried to call back, only to find the number switched off. The victim then checked for Abdul’s profile on the matrimonial site, but it was deleted.
