Bengaluru: One of the big challenges faced by the BBMP is cleaning the city graveyards and crematoriums, which are filled with leftovers like cloths, ashes, flowers, garlands etc, following post-death rituals. Taking note of this, the BBMP has decided to start compost units in the crematoriums too. These compost units are constructed using the iron mesh and the compost will be sold to the customers.
According to the BBMP horticulture department authorities who are implementing the scheme, the pilot project will be taken up in the five selected crematoriums- Harischandra Ghat, Wilson garden, Shantinagar, Halasur and Nandidurga crematoriums.
As per the plan, a mesh compost unit will be set up in each crematorium. The maintenance agency must ensure that left overs are put inside this unit. The compost will be ready by eight weeks.
“The BBMP has reserved Rs three crores for the crematorium maintenance. This will be used for the construction of the mesh compost units,” explained an officer.
