Davangere: Farmers, frustrated over the sudden crash in the price of tomatoes, threw their produce on the roads at Harapanahalli taluk.
According to sources, farmers were getting only Rs 5 for 10 kg tomatoes which translate to 50 paise per kilogram. Tomatoes were grown in 492 hectares in the taluk. Witnesses said, farmers asked people to collect as many tomatoes as they wanted after they threw their produce on the roads. A few farmers left the crop in their fields.
The reason for the sharp fall in prices was the high yield this year. Normally, tomatoes from Harapanahalli are sent to Davangere, Sindhanur, Hospet and surrounding areas for sale which didn’t happen this year and the farmers were forced to take the step.
