Bengaluru: In a tragic incident, a pregnant woman gave birth to a child in an auto, after she was turned away by three hospitals as there were no beds available.

What was heart-wrenching is that her new born died inside the autorikshaw merely a few minutes after birth, outside KC General Hospital in Bengaluru, on Monday.

As per sources, The Srirampura Government Hospital, Victoria Hospital and Vanivilas, which is the maternity wing of Victoria, all said they had no beds to accommodate.

Victoria Hospital is a designated COVID-19 facility.

The hunt for a hospital bed began during wee hours of Monday, at about 3 am. After she failed to get a hospital bed for next six hours, she ended up giving birth to the child in the auto in which she was traveling. However, when the new born died after birth, the driver had just neared KC General Hospital.

The issue was thrown to light by none other than former CM Siddaramaiah.

“A pregnant woman was denied treatment by many hospitals in Bengaluru. She lost her newborn baby after delivering it in an auto-rickshaw. @CMofKarnataka, I urge you to take action against all those hospitals that denied treatment,” he tweeted.

“More non covid patients are dying in Karnataka due to denial of treatment by hospitals. @CMofKarnataka, cancel the licences of all those hospitals that deny treatments. Just a mere warning will not move hospitals,” he said in a second tweet.

It may be recalled that a father of a newborn had staged a sit-in protest outside Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s residence on Saturday after his child died as he too could not find a place in the hospitals to treat his ailing infant.

Hospitals beds are running out due to spiking Corona cases.

On Saturday the Chief Minister ordered private hospitals in the city to reserve 50 per cent of their beds for COVID-19 patients. The remaining 50 per cent will cater to non-coronavirus patients.

On Monday Karnataka reported 3,648 new infections, of which 1,452 were from Bengaluru (Urban), where the total number of cases has crossed 33,000.
