Bengaluru: The directive by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to three universities in Karnataka has had its impact, with Christ and Yenepoya group toeing the line. UGC had pulled up three deemed to be universities in the state for attaching the suffix university, although they did not have university status. The UGC deadline expires by 4 PM on Thursday, November 30 to change the name.
Christ University will be henceforth called Christ (deemed to University) after it agreed to comply with the UGC directive. Jain University authorities are in a huddle to change the name and are likely to finalise the same before the deadline expires.
The UGC had pulled up 123 deemed to be universities across the country including Pune’s Symbiosis International University and had said that they cannot use the word “university” as per Section 23 of the UGC Act. It had also warned that these institutions would lose their “deemed to be university” tag if they failed to make the switch.
Mangalore based Yenepoya University authorities have proposed to the UGC to retain the name “Yenepoya” (deemed to be university). The communication in this regard has already been conveyed to UGC, said G Sreekumar Menon, Yenepoya University Registrar.
In addition to the above, UGC has directed KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research and JN Medical College campus, Belgaum and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Udupi to comply with Section 23 of the UGC Act.
