Fmr judges and artists appeal for peace ahead of SC Ayodhya verdict

Bengaluru: In view of the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute that is expected to be pronounced on November 17, former judges and prominent personalities from the fields of art and literature held a press conference on Saturday, November 2.

The press conference was held under the leadership of retired Supreme Court judge Justice V Gopal Gowda. Retired Karnataka High Court judge Justice Mohammad Ansar, former Kannada Development Authority President Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa, former Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Pradhikara President K Maralusiddappa, theatre artist Prasanna and others were present.

In a statement to the press, they said, “The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue, which is a century-old controversy, is expected to be resolved in another couple of days by the Supreme Court of India. With regard to this, the nation has already witnessed some of the worst communal conflicts in the past and in the current generation, the youths too are influenced by the same. Hence, the chances of damage to public property, law and order as well as peace and harmony of the society are expected to be high.”

“Irrespective of any religion or cult, we request everyone to maintain peace and harmony in society. We expect the most respected individuals in the society to kindly see to that everyone comes together and stand united as the verdict is pronounced, and try to maintain peace and harmony,” they added.

Further, the statement said, “In order to spread the message of peace, all types of medium will be used in order to reach every district administration and important places. Different programmes will be arranged to unite everyone and maintain law and order in society as well as in the nation as a whole. We expect unbiased and positive feedback from each individual no matter whom the verdict may favour.”
