Former prime minister Deve Gowda ends hunger strike

Bengaluru: Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda ended indefinite fast on Saturday evening. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered him a glass of coconut water to Deve Gowda requesting him to end the indefinite fast seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in Cauvery dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Deve Gowda told reporters that Narendra Modi sent Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and D V Sadananda Gowda as Union Government’s representatives. “Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and D V Sadananda Gowda also assured to explain the ground realities in Cauvery basin to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They told me that Prime Minister is seized of the whole matter,’’ Deve Gowda said.

Earlier, Deve Gowda, accompanied by H D Kumarawamy and other JD(S) leaders, began hunger strike in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue on the State Assembly premises. “We want justice. Drinking water is needed for people of Bengaluru and other cities in Karnataka,’’ Deve Gowda said.

Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and D V Sadananda Gowda, Leader of Opposition Jagadish Shettar and other leaders visited the venue where Deve Gowda observing hunger strike and appealed him to end the hunger strike.
