Bengaluru: Hundreds of students from the Government Higher Primary School in Manorayanapalya are in a dilemma. It is not about their exams but, their safety while attending classes. They were unable to enter their school building on Thursday, after the headmaster discovered that cracks had formed along the walls.
The cracks were a result of the repair, taken up by the BBMP, of a storm water drain adjacent to the school. In one of the classrooms, mud had caved in.
The headmaster, spotted cracks on the walls on Wednesday and lodged a police complaint at Hebbal police station. The police, however, have not registered an FIR. She said that cracks had also developed in the building’s foundation.
The BBMP has placed sandbags where the foundation has caved in and will repair the damage caused to the school building, which has three floors and nine classrooms.
Manjunath Prasad, Commissioner, BBMP, said that he would talk to the Education Department and find a solution to restore the school building. However, he added that it was a violation of the rules to build a wall right on top of the retention wall of a storm water drain.
The school has around 240 students from classes one to seven. No classes were conducted on Thursday.
