Bengaluru: The State Government has decided to conduct a massive survey of farmer-families to come up with tailor-made income-enhancement plans for each. The results from the survey would be used to “double farmer income.”

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who presided over the first meeting of the Secondary Agriculture Directorate on Saturday January 29, said that following the survey, a plan should be developed based on the land and human resources available to each farmer’s family.

Officials from agriculture, horticulture, rural development, and other departments will conduct a pilot survey in four districts, he said. Even though the Secondary Agriculture Directorate is part of the Agriculture Department, it will function independently and study agricultural practises in detail. He informed officials that other projects that can help farmers supplement their income include fisheries, animal husbandry, and other activities.

The focus should be on efficient land use and farming practises that are not labor-intensive but rely on technology. To establish markets for new produce, a collaboration with local farmer produce organisations should be formed. Officials were directed by the CM to establish a digital platform to promote exports and expand farmer markets.
