Bengaluru: Minister for IT/ BT and Science and Technology C. N. Ashwath Narayan announced on Monday March 21 that the government will launch a cyber security policy to combat cyber threats.

He was speaking at the ASSOCHAM 12th Global Summit on ‘Fraud and Forensics: Emerging Trends and Combating Challenges.’ “The policy will be focused on protecting Karnataka’s IT assets, such as the State’s data centre, wide-area network, and e-governance apps,” he said.

The initiative aims to promote and ensure the digital economy’s sustainability as well as its innovation potential. “Just as new and emerging technologies provide us with limitless opportunities, they also provide us with a new set of threats to which we must adapt,” he remarked.

As per the Reserve Bank of India data, commercial banks reported frauds totalling Rs. 1.38 trillion in 2020-21. “There is a rising trend among private sector banks to report a larger number of card and internet banking frauds,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of educating internet users about potential scams and frauds. “A two-pronged strategy of educating users about digital technology risks and building technical skills in both the government and the private sector is required to ensure the success of the Digital India programme,” he said.
