Bengaluru: Minister of Public Works C. C. Patil said on Monday March 28 that his department will not take on any new projects that will result in unnecessary expenditure for the State because the government is setting financial discipline.

He accused the former government of spillover works and taking on extra work with no funding allocation. “This has resulted in a financial problem, which we are currently trying to settle. They have taken on more work than the funds available, resulting in a funding shortage. This has increased pending bills every year,” he said.

He also said that unnecessary projects will not be approved to bring in financial discipline.

Patil said that Covid had added to the financial crisis. He also mentioned a bidder who quoted that was 25-30 per cent lower than the tender rate. “We need to look at their work and see if they are compromising on quality. This is our responsibility. Some MLAs have already raised the issue of the bidder quoting less,” remarked Patil.

He also said that they intend to implement a Schedule of Rates for all construction projects.
