Bengaluru: Minister for Health K.R. Ramesh Kumar pulled up the Jayanagar General Hospital for inadequate security and promised the girl’s father that the government would leave no stone unturned in tracing the baby. It may be recalled a five-day-old baby girl was stolen from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Jayanagar General Hospital three days ago.
On January 29, Sahanasree, a resident of Bannerghata, had given birth to twins, a boy and a girl.
While the boy was moved to the ward with her, the girl was put in the ICU as she had got jaundice, said a source at the hospital.
“Usually when a baby is kept in the ICU, she is brought to the mother for feeding at regular intervals. On Friday, the nurse gave the child to a man who according to her she had seen near the baby on other days, thinking he was a relative,” said a doctor who treated the child.
The Health Minister, who visited the hospital on Saturday to inaugurate a 100-bed mother and child block, apologised to the baby’s father Thyagaraja for the incident.
The nurse and a few other hospital staff were questioned by the Tilak Nagar police. Although the police spotted a man fleeing with the infant on CCTV footage, they were unable to ascertain his identity.
