Bengaluru: Indra Canteen, the ambitious project of the ruling Congress government at the state of starting canteen to pacify the hunger of people through these subsidized canteens is encountering trouble. As many as 32 wards of the Bengaluru city are yet to get the Indira canteen and in 15 wards, the Corporation is facing problems in identifying suitable land for the project.

According to the sources, following the huge popularity of canteens across the city, demand for new canteens is coming up from many areas. However, heavy rains in the month of September and October delayed the works to a large extent.
It is said that, out of these 32 wards, in 17 wards land has been identified and building works will be taken up soon. In rest of the 15 wards, the BBMP has no site to start the canteen.
RR Nagar, Yalahanka satellite town, Kengeri, Govindarajanagara, Bommanahalli, Banashankari, Marappanapalya, Koramangala etc are some of the areas that are eagerly awaiting the inauguration of the Indira Canteen.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad assured of launching the canteens at the earliest. “In the wards where we do not get access to corporation land or building to start the Indira canteens, we will start them in the private buildings,” he said.
