K’taka may seek CBI probe as no leads surface on Kalburgi killers

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Government is reportedly planning to hand over the MM Kalburgi murder case to the CBI as it has been a couple of months since some unidentified youth shot dead the well-known writer and rationalist and the Karnataka CID has still not been able to identify suspects.

The decision comes in the wake of a growing consensus within the political fraternity, particularly within senior ministers for the CBI to take over the case. This, despite the fact that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stated that government will not entrust CBI with the case.

“The CID police recently submitted a report to the government indicating similarities in the killing of Dr Kalburgi and other rationalists Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar. We are sure that the killers are not in Karnataka anymore. There is a vested group in the country behind all the killings. Ideally, the CBI should take over,” a senior minister noted.

“There is nothing political in the matter. Our police have made their best efforts. There are some issues which are beyond their jurisdiction,” the minister added. Last week, the government referred the CID report to the Centre and is awaiting response.

“We probed every possible angle. We detained and interrogated over two dozen people, but could not come up with any leads. It is evident that people from outside the state are involved,” sources in the police pointed out. Senior police officers are worried that any more delay in the case would help the killers further.

They pursued the involvement of Rudra Patil – former member of the Sanathan Sanstha. But Patil went off the grid more than five years ago and is believed to be living in Nepal.
