Karnataka: ‘Identity theft in State dropped to 43 pc in 2021’

Bengaluru: The number of identity theft cases in the State, which accounted for 85 per cent of cases in 2019 and 68 per cent in 2020, dropped to 43 per cent in 2021. However, according to recently released National Crime Records Bureau data, the State continues to be accountable for the majority of cases reported under Information Technology Act section 66(c).

The majority of computer-related crimes reported in the state and the country include identity theft cases.

Over 4,047 (or 20 per cent) of the 19,751 computer-related crimes in 2021 fell under this category. Of these 4,047 cases, as many as 1,764 were reported in the southern state.
