Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has informed the NGT’s Southern Bench that it will take steps to identify and issue notices to polluters at Yele Mallappa Shetty Lake in Avalahalli village on the Bengaluru-Hoskote Road.

According to the KSPCB’s affidavit before the National Green Tribunal, sewage enters the lake through unapproved layouts in 110 villages near the water body.

A case seeking remedial action for pollution in Yele Mallappa Shetty Lake was heard by the Bench. It had earlier requested that the KSPCB submit an action plan for maintaining the lake’s cleanliness.

The BWSSB further stated that the work to provide underground drainage systems and terminal sewage treatment plants (STP) to 110 villages will not be completed until 2025.

The KSPCB also stated that the BWSSB informed them that short and long-term measures are being made to prevent sewage from entering the water body, and that they have requested time until December 2022 for short-term measures and time until December 2027 for long-term measures.

The KSPCB said it has gathered information from the BBMP and local Gram Panchayats about private individuals encroaching on the lake’s buffer zone and will take measures to evict them soon.

It also stated that sewage treatment facilities/effluent treatment plants are required for all units/construction projects covered by the state’s consent mechanism. The Board has ensured that all projects have in-house STPs for sewage treatment, as well as dual plumbing systems to reuse the treated water, through this process. The Board has also been informed that action is being taken against the defaulters identified by the officers during their inspections.
