Bengaluru: On Monday October 25, the Karnataka High Court will hear a case challenging a directive from the Karnataka Legislative Committee to conduct a survey of churches and the functioning of Christian missionaries in the State.
The Karnataka Legislative Committee on Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, in a July 7 order, directed district authorities to conduct a survey to determine how many of the State’s 1,700 churches and prayer halls were legal, and also examine their activities.
In its petition, the People’s Union For Civil Liberties claims that the order is discriminatory and violates the Indian constitution.
According to the petition, the government has not disclosed any reasons or intentions for collecting data on church location, Khata number, church priest details, and so on.
