Bengaluru: Experience the soulful immortal melodies of Mohammed Zahur Khayyam popularly known to music lovers as Khayyam at the musical fundraiser Shaam –E-Khayyam hosted by Rotary District 3190 on Saturday at Good Shepherd Auditorium, Bengaluru.
The 90-year-old legendary music composer from the Hindi Film Industry, Mohammed Zahur Khayyam and his singer wife Jagjit Kaur will be in the city for a musical fund-raising event organised by Rotary District 3190 for two of their key social causes, Polio Eradication and Making India 100% Literate.
Rotary District 3190 is part of the world’s largest voluntary Social service NGO, Rotary International has more than 7000 committed Rotarians in over 150 clubs across parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The two key initiatives taken up by Rotary- Total Eradication of Polio and Rotary Literacy Missionm, requires enormous funds over and above the large sums of money contributed by the Rotarians themselves as well as through annual fund raisers. “Shaam-E-Khayyam is one such unique musical fund raiser aimed at generating funds for our two noble causes,” said the President of Rotary District 3190.
Khayyam is arguably the last of the melodious music composers who ruled the Hindi film industry during its golden era. He has composed lilting music for super-hit films such as ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Kabhie Kabhie’. Khayyam and his wife have been generous donors in their own right, and have donated all of their wealth to a trust that supports budding artists and technicians in India. He has been awarded the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for 2011.
The maestro himself and his singer wife Jagjit Kaur have kindly consented to grace the event. Music will be provided by Pioneer Suresh’s Bharti entertainers from Chennai. The galaxy of professional singers at the program from across India, include Srikant Narayan, AnandBahal, Sinchan Dixit, Samavitha Sharma, Shruti Bhide, Hitesh Mehta, Govind Kurnool, Mohammed Shammas, K Narssimhan and Aditya Vittal.
There have been no new Polio cases in India for the past 3 years and Rotary played a key role in it. We however cannot lower our guard against Polio since there have been fresh cases in our neighbouring countries, and the virus travels across borders.
Rotary Literacy Mission aims at replicating our exceptional success in the Polio drive to eradicate another pressing issue that India faces, namely Illiteracy. We hope to make India 100% literate by 2027. Our efforts in that direction are already afoot, and we feel confident of achieving the goal.
Proceeds from Shaam-e-Khayyam will be used for the said initiatives through Rotary District 3190 Charitable Trust.
