Bengaluru: Kannada, the official language of our state, is now being offered as a second language to students of an Australian school for class 12 board examination, says a media report.
According to a Indiatimes report, the Victoria School of Languages(VSL) in Melbourne, which has a large number of Kannadiga students, is offering the course to students who wish to learn the language as an optional subject.
The decision was taken on the basis of a report submitted by the Melbourne Kannada Sangha urging government schools to introduce Kannada as an optional language.
VSL is a government school and offers its students the facility of opting for various languages from class 1 to 12. The school’s language program is delivered through face-to-face teaching in language centres across the state and distance education learning as well.
Notably, it was only this academic year, that the Karnataka government had made it mandatory for all schools in the state, including private, linguistic minority and Central board schools to include Kannada in the curriculum being taught to students from class one.
It is believed that efforts are being made by the Indian Association of Australia to bring Telugu in schools.
