Bengaluru:  Minister for Home and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Dr G Parameshwara on Thursday blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing in financial emergency in the country by demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes.

Speaking at a function organised by the Karnataka State Cooperative Housing Society Limited to celebrate “63rd All India Cooperative Week” at Seegehalli in Bengaluru, Dr Parameshwara said the Narendra Modi had brought the common man and the poor to the streets by his demonetisation move. “Modi had sworn to bring back the black money kept in foreign banks by some Indians but he put the common in trouble. He had forgotten about his assurance given while seeking votes during the last Lok Sabha elections,’’ Dr Parameshwara said.

He recalled how Manmohan Singh, the then prime minister, had taken measures to take India to fifth place in the world economically during the recession. “Now Modi had decided to take the country backward by creating financial emergency. Instead of targeting rich people who have black money, he is troubling the poor, small businesspersons and labourers by making them stand in queue in front of the ATMs. These people have not committed any crime but the prime minister is penalizing them.  I am not against reforms but sufficient preparations should be made before introducing them,’’ he said.

He said the Congress government in the state had provided much help to cooperative sector. He said the state government had announced a subsidy of Rs 4 per litre to milk producers as per the assurance given during the Assembly elections. “Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday increased the subsidy to milk producers by one rupee. The government has also increased the support price for sugarcane,’’ he said.

‘Parameshwara is the next CM’

Speaking on the occasion, S T Somasekhar, MLA from Yeshwantpur and Chairman of Karnataka State Cooperative Housing Federation, said Congress would face the next Assembly election under the leadership of Dr G Parameshwara. “Congress will retain power in the state under the leadership of Dr G Parameshwara. He will be the next Chief Minister of the state,’’ Somasekhar said.

When asked about Somasekhar’s announcement, Dr Parameshwara said that he was not sure who would be the Chief Minister. “I am sure Somasekhar will become Minister for Cooperation,’’ he said.
