Bengaluru: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) order directing all industries and residential apartments in the vicinity of Bellandur lake to install Sewage Treatment Plants is likely to create financial problems for the nearby apartment dwellers violating the same.

After the closure of nearly 500 polluting industries, now it is the turn of apartment dwellers. According to the reliable sources in the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), around 500 apartments in the lake catchment area don’t have STPs and as per the NGT orders they are left with no option other than imposing fine of Rs. 5 lakh per day.

According to the sources, the KSPCB had inspected 547 apartments of the catchment area as per the NGT order and it was found that 500 apartments did not have STPs. As per the NGT orders these apartments would be required to be disconnected from all civic agencies like BWSSB, BESCOM besides paying Rs. 5 lakh fine per day for causing damage to the lake.

“Around 5 lakh people expected to be hit directly by the NGT order. But if they had followed all the rules prescribed for multistory buildings from the start this situation would have had never risen,” said an officer from BBMP.
