Bengaluru: Here is a real shocking news for the Bengaluru City residents. The BBMP has proposed garbage cess on the monthly power bill in the City limits. This amount will be different for domestic collections and commercial users.
It can be recalled here that since 2011, the BBMP is collecting 19 per cent cess on the property tax paid by the City residents. However, as the cess is not enough to manage the garbage collected in the City now the BBMP has proposed power cess.
As per the proposal, for domestic connections, Rs.30 will be collected if the power bill is below Rs. 200. It will be Rs. 60 for bills between Rs. 200 to Rs. 500. Rs. 100 will be collected if the power bill is between Rs. 500 to Rs.1000. Rs. 200 for power bill between Rs. 1,001 and Rs. 2,000. For bill amount ranging between Rs. 2,001 to Rs. 3000, Rs.350 will be collected as cess. If bill is above Rs. 3,000, Rs.500 will be collected as cess.
For the commercial connection, the cess will start with Rs. 75 for bills up to Rs. 200 per month. It will be Rs. 1,200 if the bill is above Rs. 3,000.
According to the authorities, once this cess is approved, annually BBMP will get Rs. 870 crores. It will be nearly half of the Rs. 1,500 crores spent by BBMP every year for garbage management.
