Bengaluru: The onion price continues to hit new heights every day. In first in history, the rate touched Rs.200 per kilogram in the city retail markets.
According to the vendors, at APMC, the wholesale rate for the quality onion is Rs.180. “The retail rate has touched Rs.200 per kilogram as it involves 6% middleman commission+ transport charges and the profit margin of the sellers,” explained Mahesh Kumar Chand, a wholesale onion merchant from the Yesvantpur.
Meanwhile, authorities from the Department of Food and Civil Supplies informed that the onion rate is monitored on a daily basis and a report is submitted to the state government.According to both officials and the vendors, the onion imported from Egypt has no takers, except hotels and restaurants. “Egypt onion reached the city market. But consumers are not happy with them. Even at Rs.200, onion from the Maharastra has more demand,” explained a seller adding that several loads of Egypt onions have reached Bengaluru and each of these onions weight about 500 gms. This means, only onions weight about one kg! While the local onions cost about Rs 200 per kg, this onions costs Rs 150 per kg.
