Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Friday May 14 that Karnataka plans to build hostels with over 1,000 rooms in major educational centres across the State, especially for students from the backward classes, SC and ST communities.

Speaking at the State-Level Leather Artisans’ Convention and Leather Crafts Exhibition he said that the government is devoted to the welfare of SC and ST communities.

He urged the Karnataka Leather Industries Corporation Limited (Lidkar) to increase employment opportunities in the sector. “The State budget has given Rs. 25 Crore to Lidkar. We intend to increase the allocation based on the number of jobs they generate in the sector.”

Lidkar has received Rs. 237 Crore in funding over the last five years, which has benefited 33,000 small enterprises,” Bommai said. “The leather furniture sector allows Lidkar to capture the international market,” he added.

Officials should concentrate on effective branding and marketing. Apart from that, the government has increased the subsidy for SC and ST land purchases from Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh. He also said that 30 lakh SC/ST families will receive free power for up to 75 units.
