Benagluru: The pothole menace in the state capital has claimed quite a few lives recently, forcing the chief minister to convene an emergency meeting on Monday to address the issue.
However, within two days of CM Siddaramaiah giving a 15-day deadline to fix the nearly 15,000 potholes in the city, a 21-year-old woman and a 20-year old youth both lost their lives in two different cases after being flung off their two wheelers while trying to avoid a pothole and were crushed to death by a lorry .
In the first instance that occurred on Tuesday, G Veena, 21, was riding pillion behind her older sister, G Lakshmi who swerved to avoid a pothole on their way home. As the two-wheeler slowed, a truck hit them from behind. Both the women fell from the scooter and the truck ran over G Veena, killing her on the spot while her sister sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to a hospital.
In another case that took place early Wednesday morning, a 20-year-old youth, Tejaswi Gowda too met with a similar fate after his bike skid while trying to avoid the potholes. He was crushed to death by a truck approaching from behind. His is the fifth death that has occurred in the past few days due to the bad condition of the roads in the city which has further worsened due to the torrential rains witnessed in the city.
