Bengaluru: A 72-page report submitted by Soumendu Mukherjee, inspector general of police (SHRC) has revealed that prison officials at Parappana Agrahara jail had brutally assaulted prisoners here, on July 16, precisely a day after the then DIG (prisons), D Roopa had claimed that AIADMK leader Sasikala and few other influential convicts were being given VIP comforts at the prison.
After media reports emerged that prisoners who had exposed these irregularities had been brutally tortured, the State Human Rights Commission had filed a suo motu case and begun inquiry.
Mukherjee, who met several of the inmates, in his report mentions that these inmates were lined up and thrashed inhumanely for exposing the prison irregularity and protesting the transfer of DIG Roopa.
CCTV footage examined by Mukherjee showed the inmates limping as they were being transferred out of the jail to prisons in Ballari, Kalaburagi and Belagavi in the wee hours of July 17. Some prisoners were taken away on wheelchairs.
A notice issued to Krishna Kumar, then chief superintendent of the city’s central jail requires him to appear before the commission on October 23 to give his statement.
It may be recalled that DGP D Roopa had claimed that Sasikala had given a Rs 2 crore bribe to her boss H N S Rao for availing VIP privileges at the prison.
